The upgrade of an item lets players boost an item's gear rating up 700 points and also add a bonus. Items can be upgraded by keeping them in inventory and heading to the kiln.

The Champion Leathers, as an example can be upgraded to an increase of 5 defense rating, which will allow you to keep up in cold environments with a large number of enemies. The Snowquill Headdress, on the other is able to be upgraded to +20 defense to ensure you can survive a raid with friends.
It's important to note that armor cannot be upgraded in the same way as weapons, so you'll have to focus on upgrading it to gain physical strength if you're a Warrior or Spell Power when you're Mage.
